WILLIAMS RACING

THE CHALLENGE

Williams Racing has significant pedigree as a leader in responsible business practices, having been the first Formula 1 team to publicly disclose its carbon footprint and the first to publicise a corporate social responsibility (CSR) strategy in 2012. Under new ownership and with an ambition to continue as a catalyst for positive change in the industry, the team approached Enovation Consulting in January 2021 to support them as a strategic partner in the creation of their inaugural sustainability strategy and the achievement of FIA environmental accreditations.

OUR APPROACH

Grounded at every stage in robust data analysis, alignment with globally recognised ESG standards, and deep insight about the world of motorsport, our team worked closely with Williams Racing to deliver on their objectives.

First came our assessment of their current position as a business with new ownership, a refreshed vision, and a unique reputation as one of F1’s most decorated teams – and the distillation of their sustainability ambitions.

From this point, we created a rigorous sustainability strategy roadmap rooted in evidence and extensive stakeholder engagement, developed in consultation with senior management to ensure strategic alignment and internal buy-in. To ensure long-term value, the roadmap was aligned with the FIA and Formula 1’s sustainability strategies, as well as the UNFCCC framework.

Once finalised, our team used the roadmap to develop Williams Racing’s first ever sustainability strategy, centred around five pillars tailored to the insight we had gathered. These pillars are:

  • Climate action

  • Biodiversity stewardship

  • Sustainable innovation

  • Industry access for all

  • Purpose-driven leadership

We consulted across the organisation to create ambitious yet achievable SMART targets related to each pillar that would help Williams Racing meet its goals.

As part of our ongoing partnership, we have guided Williams Racing in achieving the highest standard of FIA environmental accreditation, delivered executive sustainability education workshops, and supported the official launch of the team’s sustainability strategy. Our experts are now consulting on the ongoing implementation of the sustainability strategy, as well as the development of the first Williams Racing Sustainability Report.

THE IMPACT

In October 2021, Williams Racing committed to being Climate Positive by 2030, became the first Formula 1 team to sign the UNFCCC Sport for Climate Action Framework, and achieved the 3-Star FIA Environmental Accreditation.

These accomplishments highlight the sustainability leadership of Williams Racing and its ongoing legacy as a pioneer of best practice in Formula 1.
