THE CHALLENGE
As the globally renowned home of British motorsport racing, Silverstone is committed to leading by example, cementing this with an ambitious vision to become a world-class sustainable business and destination.
In 2022, to help turn this vision into reality, the venue enlisted the support of Enovation Consulting to guide them across both strategy and execution on a wide range of sustainability workstreams, from the development of a robust sustainability roadmap to the design and creation of best-practice policies and procedures, and from the achievement of accreditations to the impactful communication of its ESG credentials.
OUR APPROACH
Our expert team was first called upon to aid Silverstone in obtaining their FIA Two-Star environmental accreditation, following which we collaborated with relevant departments to formalise existing processes and create policies as part of a robust new Environmental Management System.
Further to this, we supported the development and publication of Silverstone’s 2022 Sustainability Report, alongside the creation of impactful content to showcase the venue’s sustainability initiatives to a wide and non-expert audience. Our team has also provided guidance on implementing sustainable activations at Silverstone events, such as the training of all Silverstone’s volunteer Marshals as Green Rangers.
Elsewhere, we partnered with business stakeholders to set clear, measurable sustainability SMART targets for Silverstone to ensure robustness and credibility. Achievements in this space were communicated effectively by publicising existing initiatives and aligning them with global frameworks, whilst ensuring the venue’s sustainability strategy aligned with not only the FIA’s environmental guidelines and Formula One’s sustainability strategy, but also the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and the UNFCCC Sports for Climate Action Framework, of which Silverstone became the first ever motorsport venue signatory with our support. As part of our continued support to Silverstone, the team will be ensuring the venue’s UNFCCC report data is completed, confirming all necessary carbon data is collected and checked.
THE IMPACT
Our ongoing partnership with Silverstone has been marked by many accomplishments. In June 2022, the circuit achieved FIA Two-Star Environmental Accreditation and is now well on its way towards achieving the FIA Three-Star accreditation. In February 2023, Motorsport UK awarded Silverstone its Environmental Award in recognition of its ambitious ‘Shift to Zero’ campaign.
